Drums:
I use the Gretch Catalina Birch
series drum set for most every gig I do lately. They are good
all around drums and work in just about every situation. The
22" x 18" bass drum delivers a good warm round sound
and when I need it, the kick, punch and slap that I must have
for funk drumming. My toms I have are a 12" and a 14"
that have very clean tone.
Heads:
I have been using lately the
Evans G2 heads for my toms and am very happy with the results.
I am using an Evans EQ 4 for my batter side bass drum head
and an Aquarian Super Kick II with no hole in it on the front
head side. This combination has worked very well for me. For
my snare drum heads I am using the remo coated ambassador
with the black dot under the coating. This is the perfect
head especially for my Craviotto, which has so much of a ring
that it needs a little taming, and the dot does the trick.
Underneath I am using the ultra thin Remo resonant snare head.
Sticks:
I love both the Vic Firth and
the Pro-mark 2B wood tip sticks and I use them for everything.
They have slightly different applications. I like the Pro-mark
sticks for heavier funk drumming and I think that the Vic
Firth design is better for jazz and blues. At any rate I like
the thick sound that I get with these heavier weight sticks.
Sampling Pad:
The Roland SPD-S is my pad of choice.
I like the size and placement of the pads and the sounds are
excellent.
Snares:
I alternate between an old simple black
metal Ludwig snare that is very crisp and tight sounding and
a custom built Craviotto that is a 14" by 4 ½
" that has nickel plated brass hoops that deliver an
amazing crack and ping. This drum has been described by Mark
Bingham of Piety St. studios as sounding like a combination
of "fireworks and razor blades".
Cymbals:
The only cymbals I use are Bosphorus.
They are amazing quality and have incredible tone. I love
all of their different lines of cymbals, but I use mainly
the gold series for my crashes, and high hats although I have
been using one of Stanton Moore's trash crashes a lot lately
and I love it. My ride cymbal is a 21" gold series with
a king size bell that I love. It produces a crystal clear
note from the bell and a dark, breathy, but clean clear ride
sound. http://www.bosphoruscymbals.com
